Monday:
Today the campers spent the day playing games and getting to know each other and the counselors. In the morning, the campers were divided into three groups: the Goat Frogs, the Black Bears, and the Ravens.
After breakfast, each group had a discussion about camp expectations, then played games in the field between Concrete High School and Concrete Elementary School. Capture the Flag was a big hit!
Then it was time for lunch, which featured a delicious salad with green from Highland Farm West and blueberries from Cascadian Farm. The campers were rewarded with stickers for trying this fresh, local produce.
After lunch campers had the option of playing more Capture the Flag, playing low-key games like Duck, Duck, Goose, or using their creative side to make wonderful sidewalk chalk art.
Tuesday:
Today, the campers rotated through three different stations: making worm bins, making their own mini-pizzas, and playing more games.
Jason Miller led the worm bin station. Campers learned about how worms make compost, and what compost can be used for. They also learned that worms love to eat fruts, vegetables, coffee grounds, and eggshells, but should not have too much bread, meat, or eggs.
Campers also enjoyed our Tuesday Culinary Corner, which featured making their own mini-pizzas for lunch, with dough donated from Annie’s Pizza. Campers could top their pizza with ingredients like peppers, pepperoni, and pineapple. Some of the more adventurous eaters even tried putting basil on their pizza.
Wednesday:
Today was the first camp field trip! We headed to Cascadian Farm to learn about soil, crops, and pollination.
One activity, lead by Farmer Jim, was learning about the different weeds that grow around their produce. Campers had a chance to help out this farm and get their hands dirty pulling weeds, which turned out to be a favorite activity for many! One of the weeds was even edible!
A second activity was learning about soil with Rachel, one of the camp coordinators. She talked about the LAWS of growing plants. Campers learned that each plant needs land, air, water, and soil to grow.
Finally, campers joined Ashley to take a tour of the flower garden and learn about bees and pollination. Campers learned about the many kinds of bees, and search through the flowers to find them. After learning about bees, the campers were rewarded with a chance to pick fresh blueberries!
After returning to the school for lunch, Brooke from the library joined us to play rhythm games and read to the campers. The campers also drew their own superheroes for the library’s Be A Hero campaign.
Thursday:
Campers spent Thursday at the Ranger Station in Marblemount. The campers spend the day doing a scavenger hunt with the park rangers to get to know more about North Cascades National Park, and about what the rangers do.
Campers were excited to visit the horses, the greenhouse, and the composting site, where there were worm bins just like the campers had made on Tuesday. Each site included questions to help the campers engage with the area and spark curiosity!
