Monday:
Today we had special guest Deirdre, from the Museum of Northwest Art, visit camp to continue working on the mural for the new Farm to School portable. She talked to campers about the list of fruits, vegetables, and animals that they created last week. Then, each camper drew their favorite item from the list. These drawings will be used on the side of the portable, so keep an eye out during the school year for your camper's art!
Tuesday:
We returned to the Community Garden with Claire today to learn more about beans. Campers made estimates about the height of bean plants, and then carefully measured the actual height with rulers. We also learned about gardening using hoes and hula hoes, and each camper got to plant their very own beans. Finally, campers played a bean relay to see which team could get the most beans across a field in a spoon.
Wednesday:
The field trip this week was to EyeSpy Border Collies. Anne Devine and her son Adam train Border Collies for sale and for National competitions. Campers got to see the "life stages" of Border Collies, from three week old puppies to fully trained competition dogs. We saw how the dogs are trained, and watched one herd sheep through a competition practice field.
Thursday:
The campers learned all about how to Leave No Trace when hiking and camping in the wilderness. We played a relay to gather items like poop bags, food containers, and other camping equipment. We used those items to talk about how to be considerate to nature and other campers. Another big hit of the day was the bear station. Bear scientist Ann brought bear pelts, made bear tracks in the gravel, and talked about black bears and grizzly bears in the North Cascades. Finally, campers learned about a popular bear food -- fish! We talked about the fish life cycle and played a game where campers could be all the stages of fish development (egg, alevin, fry, smolt, adult).
